How Language ICASS works
First Additional and Home Languages are fundamental subjects with seven formal ICASS tasks for the year. Language assessment is a mix of writing tasks, oral and listening tasks, tests and the internal trial. Because speaking and listening are assessed alongside writing, your ICASS mark reflects a rounded set of skills, not just exam-style writing.
The 40% sub-minimum
Languages carry a 40% ICASS sub-minimum, and you must also reach 40% in the external exam. Oral marks can make a real difference here, so do not skip them they are often more achievable than long written tasks and they count towards the same total.
Converting oral and writing marks
Oral and writing tasks are frequently marked out of totals like 20, 30 or 50. Before you enter a mark here, convert it to a percentage: divide your mark by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 24 out of 30 becomes 80%. Entering the raw mark instead of the percentage is the most common reason a student's estimate looks wrong.
How to use this calculator
Enter each task as a percentage out of 100. The calculator applies the weighting and tells you your ICASS percentage and whether you have cleared the 40% sub-minimum. Use it after each oral and written task to see where you stand.
